The Mermaid’s Gate

Year: 2011
Size: 36″ x 46″
Medium: acrylic on canvas

This house belongs to a woman who commissioned me to paint her as a mermaid, years ago, in 1982.  I wanted to paint her garden gate to include in my wrought iron series, and the lovely view of her home behind the gate.  The house is one of the most beautiful on the Charleston peninsula, dating back to 1806, built by Isaac Parker, planter and brick yard owner.  The garden, one of the largest in the historic district, has a huge koi pond.  At one time, many years ago, the house, surrounded by a high brick wall, looked out on the water.  Now, there are a couple of rows of houses on early landfill between it and the Ashley River.
